Richard Avedon (1923 – 2004) American Artist.
Tom Hoops and Song Chao guide me to this American Artist. As I was discovering how Richard Avedon could have inspired both English and Chinese modern artists, in the same time I understood how he left a mark of sands of time.
It is said that Avedon has caught the spirit of American way of life in his pictures. I like a lot his series “In the American West” which is for me a large study on American faces of the past century.
About his portraits
His portraits are easily distinguished by their minimalist style, where the person is looking squarely in the camera, posed in front of a sheer white background. Avedon would at times evoke reactions from his portrait subjects by guiding them into uncomfortable areas of discussion or asking them psychologically probing questions. Through these means he would produce images revealing aspects of his subject’s character and personality that were not typically captured by others.
