About Chinese Home
Robert Van der Hilst/Hu Yang/Michael Wolf
Those three artists have been working on the same subject: Home as a place to live. They also decided to take as background Chinese man and woman. Is it because it’s a country where density of population is an issue of the modern era?
I like to see how people glide into house, apartment or room; how walls are evolving through posters, utensils, furniture and decoration. This is obviously what defines us, what defines our environment sociocultural.
I discovered two of the three artists in the city of Shanghai. Robert Van del Hilst was on show in the Xuhui district: his series was talking about Chinese interior. This Project started in 2004 (his Chinese title is 中国人家 which means Chinese People) and would like to reveal the inside of Chinese home.
Then I bought a book in a library near Fuzhou Road: Hu Yang’s series which was named Shanghai living is focused on Shanghaies way of living.
Michael Wolf was a recent discover: I was looking around to see new pictures when I literally fall into Wolf photography. I really liked the work of this photographer (all his work) but was firstly surprised by the similarity between his series 100 x 100 and Hu Yang Shanghai Living.
